Taking Part in a Volunteering Task

What to expect, what to bring, and what to do if you cannot attend.

Once your application has been accepted, you’re ready to get started! Here’s what to expect and how to prepare.

What to expect

  • The charity will confirm the time, location, and any training or induction you’ll need.

  • You’ll meet new people, learn more about the organisation, and begin making a difference from day one.

What to bring or prepare

  • ID or documents – if the charity has asked for them in advance

  • Clothing/footwear – something comfortable and suitable for the activity if your role is in person

  • For remote roles – make sure you have a quiet space, reliable internet, and any logins or materials the charity provides

  • A positive attitude – being friendly, reliable, and open to learning matters most

If you can’t attend

Plans change — and that’s okay. If you’re unable to take part:

  • Let the charity know as soon as possible using the contact information they’ve shared with you directly.

  • Giving notice helps them plan and ensures the activity still runs smoothly.

💡 Tip: Being prepared and turning up on time makes a huge difference for charities — and for the people they support.
